Getting a Good Night's Sleep
- More than 100 million Americans of all
ages regularly fail to get a good night's sleep.
- About
one in four people experience disturbed breathing
during sleep.
- Women are twice as likely as men
to have difficulties falling asleep or staying
asleep
due to the menstrual
cycle, pregnancy, menopause, and post-menopause
factors.
- Fifteen percent of people experience
restless leg syndrome, a creeping, crawling
sensation
in the legs, preventing sleep's onset.
- Half of all people age 65 and over experience
twitching in the legs and
arms during sleep.

of caregivers that decide to institutionalize

Snoring
- An estimated 30 million adults snore.

Apnea
- Obstructive sleep apnea is the collapse of
upper airway tissue that causes multiple stoppages
of breathing during sleep.
- An estimated five
of every 100 people have obstructive sleep
apnea.
- Apnea sufferers usually aren't aware
of these breathing stoppages or the physiological
stresses
they produce.
- Sleep apnea in children has
been linked to SIDS, enlarged tonsils/adenoids,

and obesity.
Insomnia
- More than 35 million Americans complain of
chronic insomnia?defined as poor sleep every
night or most nights.
- Physical ailments, such
as disorders of breathing or muscle activity,
cause Half of all insomnia
cases.
- Other factors that cause insomnia are psychological
stresses, psychiatric disorders, poor sleep
hygiene, misuse of sleeping pills, jerking muscle
contractions,
reflux and lifestyle problems such as the use
of stimulants.
- Insomnia is one of the most common
symptoms of depression at any age.
Periodic
Leg Movement
- This disorder is characterized by leg movements
that occur at regular intervals while sleeping,
just enough to break the sleep pattern but not
enough to make the sleeper aware its happening.
- Five percent of people between the ages of
30 and 50, 25 percent between 50 and 65, and
44 percent over 65 experience periodic leg
movement disorder.
Narcolepsy
- A genetic, chronic neurological disorder
involving the body's central nervous system that
causes excessive daytime sleepiness, and automatic
but unremembered behavior.
- About one in 2,000
people suffer from narcolepsy.
